ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY

It is our policy to ensure that our activities are managed so as to minimise any impact on the environment, so far as is reasonably practicable.

We aim to achieve the highest status in the Carbon Smart carbon reduction programme and subsequently during our second year we have reduced our Carbon Footprint a further 17.9% from 41.82 tonnes of CO2e in the first year down to 33.77 tonnes in the second year and now further reduction to 27.4 tonnes of CO2e.  This has now enabled Unicorn to be awarded their Gold certificate.  Below shows Unicorn’s Carbon Emissions emitted per employee since embarking on the Carbon Smart programme.

Being Carbon Smart means taking an intelligent and flexible approach to reducing our carbon footprint. Carbon Smart® independently certifies the practical actions we have taken to actively reduce our environmental impact and we hope demonstrates our commitment to customers, staff and suppliers.

To continue to achieve our environmental objectives we will:-

Endeavour to reduce our Carbon Footprint by a further 2-3% in the third year of the programme from our current level of 27.4 tonnes of CO2e

Raise awareness internally through our action plan managed by Alison Smith and continue to remind our employees of the steps we need to take to reduce our carbon footprint

Communicate with our customers, informing them of our achievement in reaching our target of Gold status and continue to encourage them to participate in our 3 year programme.

We will continue to minimise waste to Landfill steeps include reusing packaging materials, recycling used toner cartridges and sorting and recycling our waste ware possible

Employees are encouraged to travel to work using environment friendly methods such as car sharing or use of public transport where practical.

To work with suppliers who themselves have sound environmental policies, we require all suppliers to submit evidence of their green and CSR credentials

We adopt “backhaul” supplier collection systems to help the company reduce costs and fuel usage.

The business reduces unnecessary journeys by collecting products from suppliers on the return journey.

We’ve added over 3000 environmentally approved products to our range this year alone and we’re working hard to ensure that every step of our supply chain is focused on reducing our environmental impact.

We have stopped the use of all warehouse paperwork at our main distribution centre, the system now means we can pick entire orders without producing any picking notes; this is all done using a digital read.

All goods are packed into the right size box designated by computer and all boxes have a miniman.50% recycled content and fully recyclable and biodegradable

This action plan will be communicated to our staff and suppliers through use of our website and posting in our offices
